New Coke came out in the early or mid eighties, back when Bill Cosby was doing Coke's promotions. The big comercial I remember was BC standing up and saying "Here is something that will make History. New Coke tastes great."About 6 months later Bill Cosby was no longer Coke's spokesperson and Classic Coke was released |

The Coca Cola Co. had the brilliant idea of trying to thwart Pepsi by making Coke a little bit sweeter, and changed the formula for Coke in 1985. They redesigned the logo and bottles at the same time. Despite the fact that in blind taste tests people preferred New Coke, there was a huge uproar, and a few months later the company brought back the old formula under the label Coca-Cola Classic. Coke was eventually renamed Coke II and then, I believe, discontinued.More info (and a great site) can be found here. |

The History Channel just did a segment on this, some of the backstory is that the CEO (who had recently led the company to introduce Diet Coke, which was very successful) felt they were losing too much market share to Pepsi and felt the reason was Pepsi's sweeter taste. |

As long as I’m promoting the fine folks at Snopes, you ought to go read the fake Smithsonian letter. It may be fake, but it’s damn funny. We’ll also nominate California gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon. Displaying a photo that you say shows your opponent taking an illegal campaign contribution: good idea. Not checking the photo before you release it to make sure it actually shows what you say it does: I guess it seemed like a good idea at the time. |

Whomever is running Bill Simon's CA campaign should be shot, then dragged through Sacramento on horseback, then thrown in the Delta, then hauled out and burned. This example is only the most recent. This summer he spent a week saying he wasn't releasing his tax returns (he's not required to), only to release them and have everyone wonder why he didn't because there was nothing wrong with them. His newest "smear Gray Davis" TV spot quotes a Mercury News article lambasting both candidates for dirty campaigning, but only applying the quote to Davis' camp. Urgh. He's a lesson in what not to do in politics. |

I regret not giving this imagery the hearty applause it so richly deserves sooner. Have we made fun of Mariah Carey's acting career in this thread yet? Can we do so again? Putting our new bed directly on the floor seemed like a good idea - until I slammed my foot into the box spring a couple of times. That hurts. |
