I really admire Hosler's ability to use comics as a way to impart information. Sometimes the characters deliver more exposition than seems natural, but given that most times comics characters do that in order to announce that their psionic blade is focused totality of their psychic powers or something like that, I can handle learning something about the life cycle of a bee in the midst of my reading.Hosler's art style is also very nice, and very reminiscent of the cartoony simplicity of folks like Jeff Smith. It can be hard to tell a story with a simple style -- it's harder to hide your mistakes -- and Hosler does it well, and in a way that should hopefully invite younger readers into the story. That's a great goal, and the Eisner nominations Clan Apis received are well deserved.
I also admire Hosler's determination for accuracy in his stories. I'm not someone who is going to nitpick every single detail of a story -- I'd never enjoy The West Wing if I did -- but it's still great to see someone with that sort of dedication to the craft of storytelling and the craft of education.
I'll definitely keep my eyes out for Sandwalk when it's finally collected. After all, I'm gonna need some bedtime reading material in a few years.
