As some of you may know Hal Jordan (Formerly Green Lantern, formerly Parallax) has become the new Spectre and if ya didn't know ya do. Well the whole basis behind the new title is that Jordan has become the Spectre in order to gain redemption for his past sins (Destroying the GL Corps, trying to erase the universe and start it over the "right way"). So it would stand to reason that eventually he will achieve redemption and no longer be the Spectre. I posed this question a few months ago on the DC Comics Message Boards and was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions: After Hal Jordan atones for his sins, who should be next to become the Spectre and strive for redemption? |

Question: Does the person have to die or be dead in order to become the Spectre? |

Well historically, yes, the host has been dead, but for the intents and purposes of this topic it doesn't necessarily have to be. When i posted this topic originally on the DC Boards, I wrote an elaborate story of what I thought would be a cool way for the Spectre-force to transfer to the next person. The short version is basically after a long battle with Extant (Formerly Hawk, formerly Monarch, was also Jordan's assistant in his attempts to recreate the universe, but has since gone on to commit more heinous time related crimes making him worse than Jordan was), Jordan would defeat Extant and achieve redemption for his crimes and that point the Spectre-force would leave Jordan and enter Extant and he would go about striving for redemption. It was a much better story the first time I wrote it, but that was months ago and I can't remember it exactly. But to answer your question, BJ, dead or alive works for me, if you pick someone among the living, we'll just kill him off. ;-) |

Not to spin the conversation in a totally different direction, but I wonder which current DC characters might make sense to be given the Hank Hall/Hal Jordan "turn 'em into villains" treatment, in order for them to need redemption -- Extant appears to be dead, Jim, and I'm not sure anyone in the DCU has had enough of a heroic career before turning to evil to warrant becoming a character as prominent as the Spectre -- except for former Infinity, Inc. hero/current JSA villain Obsidian, who quite frankly I think I may like better as a villain.Boy, this thread is already quite bogged down in DC continuity, isn't it. Oh well. |

Well I still think Extant is the best choice to succeed Hal. And although he is technically dead, he is a character with time traveling capabilities and could very easily be seen again. I think he's the best choice namely because he originally added Hal when he was Parallax and tried to recreate the universe, then Extant himself tried to do the same himself except with alot worse intentions in mind for the "new" universe. So Hal taking him out would be the way to prove that he feels what he once tried to do was wrong and would be the ultimate act of redemption. But yeah I think Obsidian would be a good choice afterwards. And quite frankly I think it would be possible for just about any character to suddenly snap and go the road Hal Jordan and Hank Hall went if they experienced a significant enough tragedy in their life. Naturally they wouldn't become petty criminals but more like misunderstood "heroes" or just snap and go on some sort of rampage of some sort. |
