Share funny websites here. The Onion's website is always good for a laugh. I actually prefer this to the written paper of theirs only because it doesn't clutter up my house. Hugh Gallagher's College Essay is always good for a quick pick me up. That last sentence still makes me bwaa-haaa-ha. Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me's web version has a funny weekly news quiz. No fair if you listen to the show the week before, but great if you happened to miss it. |

Well, even though I think he's slipped a bit in the last few years, you gotta give Dave Barry his due, particularly since he was my inspiration for getting into journalism in the first place. The Brunching Shuttlecocks is irregularly updated, or so it seems, but it has some great stuff. I particularly recommend The Sarcasterizer, but you have to go to the archives for that. |

The Top 15 Chapter Titles in Philosophy for Dummies was a particular favorite -- thanks for e-mailing it to me, Kev. A particular favorite:Man and Superman -- vs. Spiderman! Of course, even though Spidey is much cooler, I gotta give the edge to Superman here. Unless the Man has some Kryptonite to keep Superman down. |

That voodoo site scares me . . . particularly the bit about the Santa hat.Remember I asked about online gaming a while back? Well, the fine folks at Brunching Shuttlecocks have seen fit to answer a few questions on the subject here. Check it out, it's hysterical. A sample: quote: So it's an immersive fantasy world come to life?Yes, if your favorite fantasy literature includes a lot of adolescents who consider the letter "u" by itself to be a valid pronoun. Otherwise, not precisely. But I can at least put myself into the shoes of an adventurer, righting wrongs and fighting evil? Sort of. The evil in question reappears in the world after you vanquish it, often within mere minutes. and the world as a whole never changes because of anything you do. So in that way it's less like being a fantasy adventurer and more like being a social worker.

I'm weeping on the inside.I'm gonna ignore malapropisms like "I haven't had a chance to ask the questioners the question they've been questioning." What really gets me is he pulled that "the legislature enacts laws and the executive branch interprets them" stunt twice. Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick, everybody knows that an executive branch executes the laws. Why the heck do you think they call it an executive branch, anyway? With apologies to the Dead Milkmen. |

The Complete Bushisms over at Slate are extremely funny and extremely scary at the same time. My favorites are "They want the federal government controlling Social Security like it's some kind of federal program" and "The legislature's job is to write law. It's the executive branch's job to interpret law." |

That executive branch thing bugs the heck out of you, too, eh?I know the man is brighter than he's given credit for, but quotes like this still make me shudder. In fairness and in keeping on topic -- was there a better knock on Gore out there than the Snickers "I invented pants" commecial? I'm sure the Onion must've had something, but I missed it. |

Loved the track listing and the description -- the Alec Baldwin 'Anywhere But Here' list is another good one. If I remember correctly, though, it was Robert Altman who said he'd leave the country -- Alec just said he'd immediately start raising money to make GWB a one-termer. Of course, he may have more pressing money-raising needs right now . . . divorce lawyers can get expensive.[This message has been edited by Dave Thomer (edited 01-25-2001).] |

An historical note about the "Anywhere But Here" idea, Reuster and I came up with that one around Christmas time right after the election debacle was "settled." We were trying to think of TV shows that would never get made, and that one was my favorite. Another good one was "Republican Style" which was a style-type show with a panel and a guest each week. The permanent panel would be Laura Bush, Strom Thrumond, Orrin Hatch, and...god, I forget the last one. We figured since most people with "style" [read: alternative lifestyles] would most likely be democrats it would be very funny. Or go to this one, but read all the song titles in a row, much like a randsom note, which is how the CD jacket will list them. |

Most of the best knocks against Gore came from the man himself, who has a notoriously self-depricating sense of humor. At a luncheon a couple of years ago the day after the Oscars, he repeated one of Billy Crystal's jokes: "Last night, Billy Crystal said that the only one sure to be going home with a statue was Tipper Gore (laughter from audience). I didn't get it."
He also made some comical jabs during the campaign, when he said that he wanted to keep social security in a lockbox and the budget for the space program in a hermetically sealed Ziploc bag. A big part of what made Gore such a funny guy was that the Democrats just have better writers than the Republicans. Gore had Al Franken working on his campaign, and his daughter Kristin writes for Futurama, one of the funniest shows on TV. But I think the bigger picture is that Gore is just a naturally funny straight man. Just watch how the Saturday Night Live guys portrayed his interactions with Bush.

The "Bush or Chimp" thing is also making the rounds as an email. I've gotten it a couple of times at work. Also, check out this site. This company parodies those annoying inspirational posters that hang in office building conference rooms and the like. They have full color photos and words like "Success" and "Achievement" in all caps. Well, this is company puts out ones that say "Failure: When your best just isn't good enough" and other great sayings. They've expanded their line to include calendars, t-shirts, etc. I wonder if they're hiring.

If you want to find out what kind of breed of dog you would be, what flavor you are, or if you are evil, try emode.com. You can even compare and/or send your results to friends. Many hours of needless fun and multiple choice questions!Or try Lost In Translation where you can enter an English phrase and see it progressively slaughtered in translation to different languages. Like this: quote: Original English Text: Warning: This Is Not NewsTranslated to French: Avertissement: Ce N'est pas Des Nouvelles Translated back to English: Warning: They are not News Translated to German: WARNING: Sie sind nicht Nachrichten Translated back to English: WARNING: They are not messages Translated to Italian: AVVERTIMENTO: Non sono messaggi Translated back to English: WARNING: They are not messages Translated to Portuguese: AVISO: Não são mensagens Translated back to English: ACKNOWLEDGMENT: They are not messages Translated to Spanish: ACUSE DE RECIBO: No son mensajes Translated back to English: RECEIPT REQUESTED: They are not messages
That's not the best example, but you get the general idea.[This message has been edited by slgorman (edited 03-19-2001).] |
